The ThinkPad T42 was the first ThinkPad laptop to feature biometric security with an integrated fingerprint reader and embedded security chip.

"Security has always been a primary focus for ThinkPad – just as innovation has. In the ThinkPad T42, the two combined perfectly with the introduction of a built-in fingerprint reader, tied to an embedded security chip.

To activate the T42, users simply had to swipe their finger across a small horizontal sensor that would scan their fingerprint and check it against the user’s stored print.

Fingerprint security was an important development in the evolution of the business notebook, providing the security of unique user identification, while eliminating the need to remember passwords.

While biometric security is commonplace now, in smartphones and tablets as well as notebooks, the initial ThinkPad launch marked a major step forward for security in enterprise devices.
